Over the years, contributions by top scholars continually increased the Library’s collection of books and illuminated manuscripts, while great artists of the Classical and Renaissance periods added their mastery to the hallways, ceilings and furniture of the building.
At the end of the 16th Century, Domenico Fontanta erected the Library’s current building.
Today, the Library possesses more than one million printed volumes, of manuscripts and prints. The Vatican Library Collections of Jewelry and Gifts is the virtual embodiment of many of these treasured works.
